When do you think Dental Floss was invented? Well, it’s surely not a modern invention! So, when and who got this idea of flossing and cleaning the teeth for the first time?
In the flossing world, dental floss remains the most technique of all. In this method, a thin filament kind of thread is taken and then wound around the teeth. This thread helps in removing all the food particles out from the teeth gaps and keeps you protected from plaque conditions. But when did it began and who is behind this invention?
When Was Dental Floss Invented?
During the pre-historic time too, food used to get stuck between the teeth. This is how picks and other grooves came into existence. That’s where it all started! It’s in the late 1800s, that flossing term came out, and slowly everyone came to know about this treatment.
In the year 1819, one dentist named Levi Spear published his book titled ‘A Practical Guide to the Management of the Teeth’ in which he mentions about the flossing. He recommends about performing flossing using waxed thread, and to remove all the unwanted material that a regular toothbrush cannot remove. This helps in preventing plaque conditions as well.

But interestingly, the patent for the first Dental floss was given to Asahel Shurtleff in the year 1874. People didn’t understand the concept in the first though, and also the sale was low in the beginning era. This was because, people were not made much aware of this method – while many of them didn’t find it necessary.
This was during this time when professionals were trying out different tests and making different discoveries. Most important facts of all, is that silk thread was costly then, so it didn’t interest the consumers too.
After the World War II, one renowned scientist named Dr. Charles Bass created a nylon thread by replacing the silk thread. As the nylon was more affordable than the silk, flossing became something common due to this.
Even now the floss is made of nylon, but there are different varieties – waxed or unwaxed, flavored or unflavoured. Later wands made of plastic came out, in the form of floss picks which came in use against the traditional floss wrapped around the finger.
Do you floss every day? If no, then you must get started today itself. This was how Dental Floss started in the beginning, and with time there have been many advancements in this field. Liked our style of writing? Follow us on Water Flosser for regular updates from us.
